What did you enjoy most about using Akuna Pet Resort?

Knowledge that my dogs will be well looked after and well cared for

Does your Pet have any ‘Special Needs’ that we accommodated during their stay? If so, how well did we cater to those needs? E.g. own food, medication, senior, puppy, behavioural issues etc.

Monty suffers from ‘dry eye’ and needs medication twice a day.  I never have any concerns that this is being properly administered.

Misha & Gizmo R

Date: 2015

Names: Misha & Gizmo R

Breeds: Cat & Maltese X Cavalier King Charles

Why did you first choose to use Akuna Pet Resort?

We initially came to Akuna care as our cat Noodle had been refused care at another kennel. We were about to go away and were stuck. My sister spoke to her friend Kris Graham who had only praise for the team there. I called Ariel and explained the situation. Luckily there were some spots free and Noodle and Gizmo came to stay.

What did you enjoy most about using Akuna Pet Resort?

Both Noodle and Gizmo came back incredibly happy. When Noodle passed, the team was so wonderfully supportive and just so beautiful. We now have Misha who also loves it there. It is not uncommon for Gizmo to come home a little sad that he is no longer there. When he sees the van to pick him up he gets so excited that he runs on the spot. For our pets to be so happy and so loved is why we enjoy Akuna Care.

No, special needs….. Except maybe chicken… they both love chicken!

We’d love for you to share your favourite story about your pet (E.g. how they got their name or a funny thing that they have done!)

When Misha was just a young kitten, I left the house with some T-bones defrosting on the kitchen bench top. They were in a tray covered in glad wrap. I honestly felt she was too little to get up onto the bench top… I came home to find Gizmo sitting beside the kitchen bench with a T-bone in his mouth and Misha with one on the bench. Hurriedly I went to get them away from the steaks only for Gizmo to run away. Needless to say we did not have the steak for dinner.

Mel & Jambo G

Date: 2015

Names: Mel & Jambo G

Breed: German Koolie X & Kelpie X

When did you realise that Mel & Jambo had Special Needs (e.g. own food, daily medication, allergies, sensitivity to cold or heat, fear aggressive, dog unfriendly or just a little spoilt!)

MEL came to live with us in early 2000 at the age of about 1.  I think we first boarded her in 2001 at the local vet where she knows everyone and we thought she’d settle.  For subsequent holidays we tried a well-known facility in the southern suburbs of Sydney.  She hated both places.  She would begin to shake and cry on the way to either location and would be a jabbering mess on arrival.  She is a very smart, loving, sociable and non-reactive dog who is biddable and can be buddied up with strangers.  Leaving her on her own when she was so distressed reduced me to tears although I was always told she calmed down once I left her.
JAMBO came to me from a shelter in January 2009 when he was about 10 months old.  It was obvious from the start he was a really smart but very reactive character with supersonic senses, lightning reflexes and energy to burn.  It was also evident he had a bit of an attitude!!  My local vet recommended Jambo go to obedience classes where we were both “trained” in the basics.  I followed this up with one-on-one sessions with a dog handler who came to the house.
I first heard about Akuna at the obedience classes in 2009.  One of the trainers had visited the kennels and was very impressed with the individual grassed enclosures for the dogs.  I was planning my first holiday away since becoming a two-dog household and was wondering where I could board my super-cluey mature girl who would buddy with anyone and my hyperactive, mummy’s boy who needs his own space and who was, at that time, more of a concern.
I think their first boarding holiday at Akuna was in 2010 and from the outset, it has been one huge success for all of us.  The old girl can hardly contain herself when she hears the van coming up the driveway and when she takes off to meet it, I literally don’t see her for dust.  It’s more of a challenge persuading Jambo to leave his mum and his house but once he’s in the van and on his way, he’s fine.  The exercise packages, individual enclosures, not to mention the great care and attention lavished on my animals by the team, are so good that I’ve been boarding both dogs at least once a year since 2010.  These days my two cats go too.  I know they’re all safe, secure and happy.  It is also an enormous help to me to have the door-to-door collection/return travel arranged for them.

Given their special needs, did you feel comfortable trusting Akuna with Mel & Jambo’s holiday care? If yes – please share what we did to make you feel happy with your decision?

Mel’s health issues started mid 2011 when she was nearly 12 and as she’s aged her list of medical ailments has grown.  Akuna is the only place where she goes willingly and the only place I will send her now.  Marcus and Ariel and their team have all been brilliant with meeting her every need which includes feeding her twice daily with the prepared meals I send up, administering her meds and sussing out what exercise regime suits her.  They are now familiar with her habits and general demeanour and are able to notice if she’s a bit under the weather and not her usual chirpy self.  Marcus and Ariel have been excellent in ensuring she visits Cessnock Vet for a check-up if she is struggling with a tummy upset or any other health issue that is cause for concern in such an old dog.  They then keep me in the loop by email.  It is a huge relief to know that I can go on holiday and be confident that my old dog’s every need, including her mental wellbeing, is fully met.  I don’t worry so much about Jambo as he is young although it is reassuring to know he is well supervised and well exercised.

Did we do a good job of meeting Mel & Jambo’s Special Needs during their holiday stay? If yes – would you recommend Akuna to other people with Special Needs Pets?

YES – Akuna always take excellent care of Mel and Jambo and they come home “smiling”.  And YES I do recommend Akuna to friends and contacts that have pets who may need that extra bit of attention.  Akuna does a terrific job and I’m so grateful to them for looking after my dogs and cats.  To all of you – thank you so much!!

Lucy & Oscar

Date: 2015

Names: Lucy & Oscar W

Breed: Labrador Retrievers

When did you realise that Lucy & Oscar had Special Needs (e.g. own food, daily medication, allergies, sensitivity to cold or heat, fear aggressive, dog unfriendly or just a little spoilt!)

Oscar and Lucy are now 9 ½ years old.  They have been going to Akuna since they were puppies. They are from the same litter and like each other’s company!! When at Akuna the team make sure they do everything together –exercise, walks etc. – this helps them settle in very well.

As they are getting older they are often need to have medication.

Oscar has had major surgery on his hip and Lucy has had surgery on her back knee joint.

Given their special needs, did you feel comfortable trusting Akuna with Lucy & Oscar’s holiday care? If yes – please share what we did to make you feel happy with your decision?

The team at Akuna are very attentive to their needs and always check with us if the information we send them is not clear to ensure Oscar and Lucy receives the correct medication. They contact us if there is any question or doubt about what is required.

When staying at Akuna after their operations the team substituted the normal activities for ones that were suitable for them – for example, a bush walk on a leash rather than a romp in the leash free yard.

Did we do a good job of meeting Lucy & Oscar’s Special Needs during their holiday stay? If yes – would you recommend Akuna to other people with Special Needs Pets?

I am confident that Oscar and Lucy are in good hands when they stay at Akuna.  They have cared for them, accommodating their special needs, at all the different stages of their life so far – I am sure they will continue to offer the correct care for them in the future.

Henry & Alice H

Date: 2015

Names: Henry & Alice H

Breed: German Shepherd & Miniature Schnauzer

When did you realise that Henry & Alice had Special Needs (e.g. own food, daily medication, escape artist, sensitivity to cold or heat, fear aggressive, dog unfriendly)

Henry has been on twice daily medication since he was young.  Alice has required medication and a special diet as she gets older due to chronic illness (pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease) which are common to her breed.

Given their special needs, did you feel comfortable trusting Akuna with Henry & Alice’s holiday care? If yes – please share what we did to make you feel happy with your decision?

I did a lot of research and I believe that Akuna is the only boarding facility that offers care for dogs with special needs and gives them full individual care.  Most places insist on dogs sharing with other unknown dogs which can be a recipe for disaster in many cases.  Akuna gives Henry and Alice the type of care that they get at home which is quite amazing.  Staff are fully trained and experienced in giving medication too as evidenced by the calm and healthy dogs that await me when I pick them up.

Did we do a good job of meeting Henry & Alice’s Special Needs during their holiday stay? If yes – would you recommend Akuna to other people with Special Needs Pets?

Akuna does an amazing job in caring for Henry and Alice.  I really don’t know where I would be without them! Also, I know that if Henry or Alice became ill during their stay at Akuna that they would be given veterinary care immediately with no risks taken.

Elliot & Doogie G

Date: 2015

Names: Elliot & Doogie G

Breed: Terrier X

When did you realise that Elliot & Doogie had Special Needs (e.g. own food, daily medication, allergies, sensitivity to cold or heat, high energy, dog unfriendly or just a little spoilt!)

Elliot came to us late in life after living on a balcony for 8 years, so he needed spoiling, then as he got older he just needed looking after. His previous owners never even vaccinated him. You should have seen him when he realised he was inside, on a soft bed next to the heater. He stretched his little body out to feel every bit of his new doona and smiled.

Doogie was a rescue dog too. He came to us in 2001 and the vets couldn’t decide if he was 2 or 5. Either way he is now a little elderly and sometimes likes to just stare into the distance and then leap about like a puppy.

He has always been a picky eater and likes to check his food 2 or 3 times before he decides to actually eat it and because he has, we think, a bit of dementia, he will happily not eat and then get hungry later.

Both my elderly gentlemen are wobbly on their feet, blind-ish and a bit deaf so a gentle loving approach is needed

Given their special needs, did you feel comfortable trusting Akuna with Elliot & Doogie’s holiday care? If yes – please share what we did to make you feel happy with your decision?

Yes I do. The dogs came back healthy and happy. Loved the Instagram’s and the way the carer was gentle with them.

All contact with Akuna staff was positive and helpful.

Cassidy & Miss Jeanie P

Date: 2015

Names: Cassidy & Miss Jeanie P

Breed: Greyhound.

When did you realise that Cassidy & Miss Jeanie had Special Needs (e.g. own food, daily medication, allergies, sensitivity to cold or heat, high energy, dog unfriendly or just a little spoilt!)

Cassidy and Miss Jeanie are both rescue greyhounds who had vastly different previous lives. Miss Jeanie came to me a year ago as a 7 year old and was quite timid. She has had a few health problems since then and she, more so than Cassidy, has needed some ‘extra’ TLC. She needs lots of reassurance, sometimes her own food as dietary changes can upset her tummy, and is quite sensitive to the cold. Thunder storms absolutely freak her out to the point that she shakes quite uncontrollably. Both Cassidy and Miss Jeanie like short bursts of exercise and opportunities to run and play (as you can imagine). They are quite pampered at home in the hope that they both live out their lives in comfort as they give me so much love and affection.

Given their special needs, did you feel comfortable trusting Akuna with Cassidy & Miss Jeanie’s holiday care? If yes – please share what we did to make you feel happy with your decision?

Yes, absolutely. My previous dog Macca was regularly at Akuna, then Cassidy before I adopted Miss Jeanie. The staff are always friendly and make an effort to get down to ‘doggy’ level to make the dogs feel welcome and reassured when we arrive. Cassidy almost always does several laps of the office area when I drop him off or pick him up – he is never roused on for doing so, but met with friendly pats by the staff. Miss Jeanie is now following his lead. The staff have been patient and attentive as I have explained the dogs’ needs and latest ‘issues.’ Any request has been met with honest appraisal as to how they can help. The daily Instagram videos have reassured me that they are having a great time, being exercised and loved.

Did we do a good job of meeting Cassidy & Miss Jeanie’s Special Needs during their holiday stay? If yes – would you recommend Akuna to other people with Special Needs Pets?

Yes, I have always been happy with the way in which the staff has met Cassidy and Miss Jeanie’s needs – indeed I recently brought their Greyhound ‘cousins’ belonging to my son and daughter-in-law for a holiday stay as well. Four greyhounds, all with unique personalities and needs, were well cared for.

Bella & Ralph M

Date: 2015

Names: Belle & Ralph M

Breed: Miniature Schnauzers

When did you realise that Belle & Ralph had Special Needs (e.g. own food, daily medication, escape artist, sensitivity to cold or heat, fear aggressive, dog unfriendly)

My oldest dog Ralph is almost 15 years. He has always had very sensitive skin so it has been some years since he has needed medication and special skin treatments. As he got older he had more health issues successfully treated with medication and also he lost his sight and hearing. Nevertheless, he was happy and much loved. He had a serious accident last year as a result of which he needs more attention and care.

Given their special needs, did you feel comfortable trusting Akuna with Belle & Ralph’s holiday care? If yes – please share what we did to make you feel happy with your decision?

Ralph has spent holidays at Akuna for about 13 years now and Belle about 8 years. I feel completely comfortable having them cared for at Akuna and there is no other place I believe would care for them in the same way, particularly Ralph with his special needs. Since he has his serious accident last year he has stayed at Akuna a couple of times and returned healthy and happy. Akuna send wonderful videos by email to me during the stay where I can see my precious dogs and feel confident that all is well.

Did we do a good job of meeting Belle & Ralph’s Special Needs during their holiday stay? If yes – would you recommend Akuna to other people with Special Needs Pets?

Akuna did an excellent job caring for Ralph’s special needs. I would, and I do, recommend them in the strongest possible way to others, especially those with precious dogs who need particular attention and special needs.

Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier & Basenji

Why did you first choose to use Akuna Pet Resort?

Recommended by Barbara Hodel @ Goodog Training.

What did you enjoy most about using Akuna Pet Resort?

Pick up was very handy. Dogs came back happy.

Does your Pet have any ‘Special Needs’ that we accommodated during their stay? If so, how well did we cater to those needs? E.g. own food, medication, senior, puppy, behavioral issues etc.

Our dog Bella has some behavioral/anxiety issues and is not very social with other dogs (but does love humans) She requires daily medication for this situation.

I felt as though all requests were met with a “can do” attitude, and I felt confident that everything had been done as requested.
